Why are essential oils called "essential?"

The word "essential" comes from how the oils are made. In short, the smell or essence of a plant is distilled into an oil. That oil contains certain benefits of the original plant. You can read more about this topic here.

Essential oils are mostly used for in-home aromatherapy, however some oils can be used topically and internally. It is important to always read the labels of every essential oil before use.
