A Breakfast of Frogs

rootedinmystrength

I'll never forget when I was in middle school, my mom adopted a weird phrase, "go eat that frog."

Eat a frog? I've never been a picky eater but drawing a line at amphibians sounded fairly reasonable at the time. It was explained to me "go eat a frog" really meant to do the hardest part of your day first, then everything else will be easy or easier in comparison. What a thought! Start your day off with some large, impossible thing to have an easier day.

Well, dear reader, I'm here to tell you there are times where that genuinely works. Personally, I'm not a fan of herculean tasks before noon but I've definitely needed the frog method a number of times. My frogs probably aren't what you'd expect. I'd like to remind you everyone is different and everyone is fighting a hidden battle.

My frogs can look like waking up and staying awake. My frogs can look like eating. My frogs can look like a phone call. And there are days where that frog, whatever it is will follow me around all day, uneaten.

Whenever I let a frog make it through the day uneaten, I have a bad habit of beating myself up for it. I feel like the biggest failure on the face of the planet. Sometimes the frogs taunt me. Ever notice how loud frogs are?

I do have a deep love of real frogs. In fact, if you've ever visited my Facebook or Instagram pages you've likely seen the family frog, Frogrickson. I love their nighttime songs. I've even tried planning out a frog friendly portion of my garden to encourage more froggy visits. What would go into a frog friendly garden? It all boils down to access to water and places to hide.

I have a theory if I make a place for my yet to be eaten frogs, at the very least they won't be so loud if they go ignored for a bit. And in the name of honesty I don't know what that would look like yet. In the name of honesty, I'm eating a frog right now. Writing this blog. I wanted to skip this week. After a long, painful month and a long night last night I felt like I deserved a day off. But ignoring my readers isn't right, so look out stomach here comes that frog.

Please be gentle with yourselves dear readers. We're coming to a time that's difficult for a lot of people. We are not alone. And maybe there's days where eating frogs is absolutely impossible. That's okay. You will find it in you to go eat that frog.

Peace to you,

Willow R.
