Meraki is a Greek word to describe giving a part of yourself into whatever you're doing. Usually this is around creativity, love, and soul. Of course it is so easy to pour yourself into things that support someone else and their goals. And even easier to forget about pouring back into ourselves.
Self care is not selfish. This is a thought I struggle with a lot! It is not selfish of me to take time to do my skincare routine or take my time going through yoga sequences. The critic in me would argue time spent doing these things takes me away from my kid and my housework. Luckily, I can argue back to my inner critic when I give myself what I need to feel centered I have more to pour into whatever it is that needs doing during the day. If you remember anything from this blog, remember this: self care is not selfish!
Deciding on just one self care activity can be overwhelming! If you're anything like me, dear reader, you might be prone to overthinking and overreaching. Starting with just one thing will lead into more- trust me. Self care can including reading, meditation, doing something creative, spending time in nature, or grounding yourself. To make this sound more like an infomercial- there's many more options folks! Whatever you do choose, make sure to do it with Meraki. Put up the phone, minimize distractions, focus on your self care. Self care is not selfish.
I like to start and end my day with my self care, but you can choose any time of day. I know if I try doing self care in the middle of the day I'll be too distracted. I won't be able to really pour myself into my self care. What activity did I choose? Yoga. I chose yoga because it helps connect my mind and my body which goes a long way to minimizing my CPTSD symptoms. Yoga helps me start my day grounded and end my day relaxed. I use aromatherapy throughout the day to stay grounded and stay on top of my chronic pain and PTSD. I like to add lavender, lemon, sweet orange, and patchouli oils to my diffuser during the day to stay grounded and feel uplifted.
I have noticed a distinct difference in my days after choosing yoga as self care and following it up with aromatherapy. My pain levels are consistently lower, I feel lighter, I've been more productive and consistent with daily routines. I am able to focus on everything in my day with Meraki.
The thing about any self care activity is it can be incorporated with aromatherapy. Reading with a diffuser running, meditating with a lotion designed to encourage focus, the beauty of aromatherapy is how versatile it is. That is what I offer at Rooted in my Strength; personalized, handcrafted aromatherapy blends designed to support my clients' holistic journey. I work with clients one on one as a team and design a blend just for them and their journey.
Have a fabulous day, dear reader, and whatever you do, do it with Meraki.
